Thomas Travis died young.
This profile is part of the St Helens, Lancashire One Place Study.

Thomas Travis was christened on 27 Jan 1839 at Christ Church in Eccleston, Lancashire. He was the son of William and Mary Ann Travis. His father's occupation was recorded as watch maker, and the family's address as Eccleston.

Thomas died at 4 months old, and was probably buried on 13 May 1839 at Christ Church in Eccleston, Lancashire; his address was recorded as Eccleston.

Research Notes

The death years of William and Mary's eldest two children, Alice and Thomas, are a little uncertain. Their burials are among the first four in the register of Christ Church, Eccleston, and it was in the early years of civil registration, so people may not have understood the requirements of civil registration well yet.

Of the first five burials in the register (Thomas Travis, Elizabeth Longworth, William Rose, Alice Travis and Anne Cook), only 2 have matching death registrations - the two burials of adults. William Rose's death (aged 48) was registered in the third quarter of 1839, but the burial date as currently transcribed on Lancashire OPC reads 25 Jul 1840.

From this I would infer that the church register is either incorrect or has been mistranscribed for some of these early entries, and that Thomas Travis' death, since it's listed before that of William Rose, was also in 1839 rather than 1840 as transcribed, which would make his age of 4 months plausible and consistent with his christening in January 1839.

Anne Cook's death registration was in the first quarter of 1841; so Alice Travis' death had to be between the third quarter of 1839 and the first quarter of 1841, so a burial date of either 31 October 1839 or 31 October 1840 would work, and her death age of 4 combined with her known christening date doesn't make it possible to eliminate either of the two years.
