Captain Delancey Trefry -- to quote his wife's obituary -- "was a sea captain on numerous vessels plying New York Ports to Africa, South America and the China Seas" but he also captained barques, brigs, and brigantines bound for numerous ports in Canada and Europe as well. His wife accompanied him on many of his voyages -- two of their children were even born at sea.
When the Age of Sail waned, he and his wife moved from Nova Scotia to Boston for a time, where, as a master mariner, he first continued to work as a sea captain and then briefly established a fruit and confectionery operation. They later moved to Greenwich, Connecticut, and, in their last years, into the home of their daughter, Maria, and her husband, J.P. Crosby, where both Delancey and his wife died.
In addition to Delancey Westcott (who was their fifth child, fourth surviving) and Rachel Westcott (who was their eleventh child, ninth surviving) Rachel Mary and Delancey Gesner Trefry had 10 other children, all but one of these remaining (Ocey) were born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia
