Biography

Joshua Pitman Trefry was born October 19, 1807, the son of William and Elizabeth Ellenwood Trefry of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

Circa 1835 he married Sarah Hurlburt, daughter of John Hurlburt, and had children[1] [2], including:

  1. Sarah Elizabeth, born April 26, 1835[3], who married John Andrews in 1857[4]and Miner Gray in 1886[5]
  2. Eliza Jane, born May 11, 1836[3] [6] [7], who married Jonathan Smith and had children, and who died January 12, 1922[8]
  3. Olivia, born May 7, 1837, who married John Hatfield, and who died December 10, 1919[9]
  4. Abraham, born December 15, 1839, who drowned August 8, 1857[3]
  5. Sarah, born October 18, 1841[3], who married John Hamilton in 1867[10]
  6. Caleb, born June 25, 1845[3], who married Sarah Hamilton in 1867[11]
  7. Elephalet, born August 4, 1843[3], who may have died young
  8. Joshua Pitman, born April 2, 1847[3], who married Emily Jane Hurlburt in 1869[12]
  9. Freeman, born January 16, 1849, who died in 1919[13]
  10. Stillman Trefry, born December 23, 1850, who married Mary Alice Curry in 1874[14] and died in 1943[15]
  11. Benjamin, born July 24, 18552[3], who married Jessie Cavanagh in 1881[16]
  12. Mary Hannah, born November 8, 1852[3], who married George Bullerwell in 1880[17]
  13. George, born June 2, 1857[3], who married Alva Hurlburt in 1882[18], and who died in 1931[19]
  14. Deborah, born October 31, 1859[3], who married Alexander Hurlburt in 1883[20]

Some online trees suggest Joshua died in 1889. This is consistent with the Census information. He appears in the 1881 Census, however Sarah is widowed in the 1891 Census.[21] [22].
