John was born in Auckland, New Zealand, ^[1] in about 1866. He was the son of John James Trethewey and his wife Mary Jane. ^[2]

He married firstly, in 1888, Jane Buckland ^[3] (d 1928); and secondly, in 1929, Alice Mary Harris. ^{[4] [5]}

John died on 16 July 1940, ^[6] and was buried in Papatoetoe Cemetery. ^{[7] [4]}
