Biography

This profile is part of the Trethewey Name Study.

John Trethewy was born on November 27th 1829, and baptised at home. On October 12 1830 he was 'received into the congregation' of the Church at St Austell. Parish register records his parents as Thomas, a miner, and Joanna his wife.[1] The family lived at Holmbush, a village east of St Austell, which at the time was a centre for tin and copper mining.[2]

In 1851 John was 21 and working as a copper miner. He was living with his mother Joanna (62) and sister Milcah (27). [3] John's father Thomas had died after an accident in a mine in 1841.

John appears to have gone east to work, because in 1853 he married Mary Doble in the parish of St Ive. He and his bride are residing at Bodminland (now Pensilva)[4], and he is working as a miner. His father is recorded as Thomas Trethewey, miner. Mary's father is William Doble, also a miner.[5]

Research Notes

In 1881 there is a John Trethewy, a tin miner, who was born in St Austell, and living 'near Chacewater Station' in the parish of Kenwyn, (Truro), with his wife Mary and four children. It is possible that this is John.[6] Alternatively, further research might find a death or a move out of county which would disprove this link.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
