Mary was born in 1871. She was the daughter of James Trethewey and Elena Tellem. She passed away in 1899.

Birthplace

Gravestone in image shows place of birth as Jersey, England - which would be Jersey in the Channel Islands. The 1871 Census shows parents James and Helena, and older sister Annie, living in Albert Road, St Helier, Jersey. ^[1][2]

The census also shows, living at the same address, another Trethewey family, namely William (26), his wife Susan (21) and their daughter Mary (5 weeks or months). Since Trethewey is not a common Channel Islands name, it is very likely that William is a relation to James, possibly a brother. This Mary, the daughter of William, was born in Jersey either 5 weeks or 5 months (the writing is unclear) before the census was taken on the night of 2 April 1871. Therefore her birth month/year would be either February 1871 or November 1870. According to her sister Annie's affidavit (see image on her profile), the Mary Trethewey of this profile has a birth date of 26 October 1871, so if this is correct there are two Mary Tretheweys born in Jersey within a year of each other. This means that researchers must be cautious.

Civil registrations of birth in Jersey are not available online^[3] so there is no way of checking these births other than in person.
