Ernest was born in 1879. He was the son of James Trethewey, a labourer, and Emma Tippett. [1] His birth was registered in the September Quarter of 1879 in St Austell. [2] Ernest was baptised on 29 September 1879 at the Bible Christian Chapel in Tresaize, just outside Roche. [3]
In 1881 James and Emma Trethewey were living at Rees Hill, near Roche. Ernest was just one year old, and his brother Thomas Henry was 3. Their father James was working as a China Clay labourer.[4]
In 1884 Ernest's father James died, aged just 31. [5]
By the time of the 1891 Census Ernest was 11, and living in the centre of Roche with his widowed mother Emma and two brothers, Thomas Henry (13) who was working as a china clay labourer, and Guy (8). Emma was working as a charwoman. [1]
By 1901 the family had moved to the nearby hamlet of Trezaise. Ernest, now 21, was working as a china clay worker. He was living with his mother Emma, now 48, and Guy (18) who was working as a carpenter. Ernest's older brother Thomas Henry had since married and moved out of the household. [6]
Ernest died in 1903, aged just 23. [7] He was buried in Roche on 28 March. [8]
