Thomas was baptised on 10 April 1813 in St Stephen in Brannel, Cornwall. He was the son of Thomas Trethewey and Elizabeth Olver. At the time of his baptism the family were living at Kirpallah and Thomas senior was a carpenter. [1]
Thomas married Frances Allen by banns on 5 April 1842 in St Stephen. Thomas was a millwright living at Cort Mills, and Frances's residence was Dowgas. Thomas was able to sign his name of the register but Frances signed by mark. Thomas's father was recorded as Thomas, a carpenter, and Frances's was Thomas, a farmer. The witnesses were Thomas Allen and George Pinch. [2]

By 1871 the family had moved to Devon and were living in Shaugh Prior, a parish on the southwest side of Dartmoor. It appears from the different birth places of their children that they had moved from St Stephen where Thomas and Frances were married, to Lydford in Devon, back to St Austell in Cornwall and then the short distance back to St Stephen, followed sometime between 1866 and 1870, to Shaugh Prior:
