They apparently moved to Iowa in 1854 since he claims to have been in Iowa for 61 years in the 1915 census.[15]
"Grandfather Tripp was a lawyer. Until he was 40, he had been a farmer in Clear Creek township, Jasper County. The big depression of the early nineties was too much for him, so he sold his livestock and went to Colfax. There he studied law in the office of General Weaver, until he passed the bar.
"In those 28 years before his death, he became successful, known throughout the state in professional civic and church life. (He was). . . one of those who brought electricity to Colfax years before many other communities. He was also a Democrat. When I was small I used to think the U,S. government would decay if the Republicans got into office. I also had the same opinion about the Methodists. I used to feel sorry for my friends in the Methodist church who would not be able to get into heaven because they had not been immersed. In later years, we discussed neither politics nor religion, if we could help it, when my grandfather was present. He was a strong man, strong of will and opinions. He was tall, quite dignified . . . and I was always proud of him, but also always in awe. He did think well of me, though. With his habits of not noticing the little things around him, he would surprise me with such things as a pair of beautiful roller skates . . . .
"When the Civil War broke out in 1861, he was only 13, and too young to enlist. By the time the war was ending, he thought it was time for him to serve his country. I remember his telling, he attempted to sign up, but was too youthful looking and could not make it. He said that was difficult for him all of his life, being nearly the age of the other fellows who had had the war experience, and he not able to join the G.A.R.. . .
"I think his formal education ended at the age of 11 or 12, . . . but he was a student all of his life. His library in the big brown house at Colfax, was no doubt one of the largest in town, or the country. He served on the school board for years, on the town council, and was elected mayor. Was elder in the Church at Colfax as long as he lived there.
"First a farmer, then a lawyer in Colfax, Iowa later moved to Newton, Iowa In Newton lived at 808 S. 2nd Ave. W."[16]
