Notes

Note NI3036There is no proof that this John Trisler is the son of Peter and Rosina Brunner Trisler. It is speculated based on a study of male Trislers of the appropriate age who were who were living in Jessamine County Kentucky in the late 1700s-early 1800s. There were three John Trislers born at a time to be considered as the John Trisler, father of Daniel Trisler and ancestor of this Trisler line in Monroe County Indiana -- one born in 1789, one born about 1800 and one born about 1805. The oldest of these John Trislers is proven to be the son of Michael and Catherine Trisler-his parentage is identified in the book History of Clermont and Brown County Ohio in a biographical sketch of his son-in-law Joel Bolander. One John Trisler appears to be the son of Henry and Mary Barr Trisler, based on the 1850 census record for Jessamine County Kentucky. It appears that this John Trisler, age 50, is living with his mother (Mary Barr Trisler) and his sister (Susan) and her husband David Smith, along with a nine-year child (Woodson - described as "idiotic", son of Cathy Trisler, deceased) who may be his grandson or his nephew. (See US Federal Census 1850, Kentucky, Jessamine County, District Number 2, stamped "49", hand numbered "97"). It is possible that this John Trisler is a son of Dr. Peter Trisler, but not as likely. In 1806 Dr. Peter's wife, Elizabeth, stated in a suit filed with the Jessamine County Circuit Court that she had borne ten children during her marriage to Dr. Peter Trisler but that she was now old and destitute as he had taken up with a younger woman with whom he had a child -- probably one or two years of age at the time. (See Trisler vs Trisler, Jessamine County Circuit Court, filed July 1806; original record housed at Kentucky State Archives, Frankfort, Kentucky) Six children of Dr. Peter and Elizabeth Trisler have been identified; these children were born between 1770 and 1788, indicating that Elizabeth Trisler may have been past child-bearing age by the late 1790s, although we have no other information to suggest her age. Of the six known children, only two males (Henry and Peter Jr.) are old enough to be on the Jessamine County Tax Rolls (at least 21 years of age) by 1800. The other four known children are females. The only male Trislers in Jessamine County KY with whom to connect John Trisler, father of Daniel Trisler, are Peter Trisler Jr. or Dr. Peter Trisler. Because of the statements made by Elizabeth Trisler in her 1806 case, it is not likely that this John Trisler, born about 1805, is likely her son. We do know that Dr. Peter Trisler was approximately 55 years old in 1800, based on his age of 74 at his death in April 1821. It would be consistent for his wife Elizabeth to be approximately 50 years old in 1800. 1

Further support for John Trisler being the son of Peter Trisler Jr. includes the following: In the 1810 Jessamine County census, there are six male Trisler children under the age of 10.

One is with Dr. Peter Trisler. This may be an illegitimate child rather than a child of his and Elizabeth given the situation between them as outlined in the court case of 1806.

Four of the under 10 males are with Henry Trisler. They are John born 1800 - he stayed in Jessamine County (1850 census); Henry, born 1803-he went to Louisiana; Jacob born 1807, and David born 1810.

One is with Jacob Trisler. This Jacob is the son of Michael and Catherine, who moved to Clermont County Ohio between 1820 and 1830. He had a son Joshua born in 1809. 1

Peter Jr. Trisler doesn't appear in the 1810 census so we have no way of knowing if he had a male child under 10. But he is in the 1820 census with a male child between the ages of 10 and 16. This child is likely this John Trisler who becomes the father of Daniel Trisler. 1

The Jessamine County Tax Rolls, began in 1799, list those male residents who have reached the age of 21. A John Trisler appears first on those Rolls in 1823. This would seem to be the John Trisler who is likely the son of Henry and Mary Barr Trisler and is consistent with his having been born about 1800 and appearing in the 1850 census as 50 years old. The second John Trisler appears on the Jessamine County Tax Rolls for the first time in 1827 and this would be consistent with this being the son of Peter Jr. and Rosina Brunner Trisler, born about 1805.". 1

Amanda Thornburg, age 13, born Indiana.

Laura Thornburg, age 8, born Indian, cannot read or write.

James Thornburg, age 5, born Indiana.

Mary Thornburg, age 3, born Indiana. 1

Note: James and Nancy Trisler are the children of Emeline and Abraham Ensey and are John Trisler's step-children. Emeline, his second wife whom he married 4 Jul 1854 (Sarah died 1 Sep 1853), died between Mar 1858 and the taking of this census. Either James and Nancy took the Trisler surname or the census recorder assumed that their surname was Trisler rather than Ensey. The child Emeline Trisler is the daughter of John and Emeline Ensey Trisler. Living with John and the children are Elizabeth Thornburg, age 37, housekeeper and her four children. On 10 May 1861, John married a Jane Thornburg; this appears to be the same woman as the same children are with them in the 1870 census. However, Jane's tombstone at Green Hill Cemetery in Bedford (Lawrence County) IN gives her birth year as 1810 and says that she was 70 years old when she died in 1880. The stone also says she was born in Pulaski County KY which is where John and Sarah, his first wife, spent some time in the the 1830s before returning to Monroe County IN. Perhaps John had known Jane in KY before he married her in 1861?. 1
