Biography

Catherine Ann Troutman was born on January 18, 1852, in Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, to Isaac Troutman and Eliza Heiner.

Catherine married George Washington Hall on May 27, 1869, in Marion, Linn, Iowa.

The 1870 U.S. Census for Linn, Linn, Iowa, finds a George Hall, age 28, and his wife, Kate Hall, age 20. George is a farmer, born in Ohio; his wife is listed as being born in Iowa. I'm not sure if this is the same family, but I have included it here, because might be. More research it needed. The family was certainly in Linn county, Iowa, at this time, and Kate was probably pregnant with their first child, Homer Leander Hall.

At least three children were born to George and Kate in Iowa. By 1880 they had traveled to Kansas.

The 1880 U.S. Census for Graham, Graham, Kansas, records that George Hall was a white farmer, 34 years old, born about 1846 in Michigan. Also noted is that his father was born in New York, and his mother was born in France. Catherine Hall is listed as his 27-year-old wife, born in Pennsylvania. The children are listed as follows: Homer Hall, son, 9 yrs, born in Iowa; Mary Hall, daughter, 7 yrs, born in Iowa; Bessie Hall, 2 yrs, born in Iowa.

The 1885 Kansas State Census for Grahm County finds the following household: Geo. Hall, age 37, white male, married, farmer; Kate Hall, age 32, white female, married; Homer Hall, age 14, male; Mary Hall, age 12, female; Bessie Hall, age 8, female; Orpha Hall, age 4, female.

By 1890 the family had traveled from Kansas to Nebraska where two more children were born.

By 1893 the family had traveled from Nebraska to Missouri where their daughter, Kitty, was born.

The 1900 U.S. Census for Township 23 N Range 22 E, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, finds George W. Hall as the 54-year-old head of household. He is white, married for 31 years, born in April 1846 in Illinois. He is a farmer, and can read and write. His father is listed as born in Illinois; his mother is listed as born in New York. The family is listed as follows: Cathrin Hall, wife, age 48, born in PA; Lafross Hall, son, age 15, born in KS; Emmzitta Hall, daughter, age 10, born in NE; Harry R. Hall, son, age 9, born in NE; Kittie B. Hall, daughter, age 8, born in MO; Hazel D. Hall, daughter, age 4, born in MO. The record indicates that Catherine had 10 children, 8 of which are still living. This means there is another child unaccounted for.

The family came to Enid, Garfield, Oklahoma, from Pawnee in 1903. George Hall died in December of 1907.

The 1910 U.S. Census for Enid Ward 2, Garfield, Oklahoma, lists Kate Hall as the 58-year-old head of household. A widow, she is listed with her children: Erma, daughter, 19 yrs, born in Nebraska; Harry Hall, son, 18 yrs, born in Nebraska; Kittie Hall, daughter, 16 yrs, born in Missouri; Hazel Hall, daughter, 13 yrs, born in Missouri.

The 1920 U.S. Census for Enid Ward 2, Garfield, Oklahoma, lists Cathern Hall as head of household. She is a widow, 67 yrs, white, and can read and write. She is listed with her 26 yr old daughter, Ketty (Katherine Blossom Hall; her nickname was Kitty).

The 1930 U.S. Census for Enid, Garfield, Oklahoma, finds Catherine Hall as the head of her houseold. She is 78 years old, white, born in Pennsylvania, as were both of her parents. Her daughter, Katherine Hall, 35 yrs, born in Missouri, is the only person listed with her.

It seems Catherine was briefly married to Melvin LeFever before her death. He could be a relative of her brother-in-law, Daniel Webster LeFever; more research is needed.

Catherine Troutman died on May 9, 1931, in Enid, Garfield, Oklahoma. Her obituary was published in two regional newspapers, one being the Enid Daily Examiner on May 9, 1931:
