As a young woman she was a schoolteacher in Turbotville, Pennsylvania, USA. She was the first wife of John R. Shuman. They had three children. She also had two children by a previous marriage, one of whom died as a young man, in an automobile accident.
She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge.
She is buried near her parents' plot, with her brother, Dr. G Allen Troxell and his wife Hattie in Turbotville, Pennsylvania.
