Biography

Ann Troxell was born in 1817 in Virginia.[1][2]

The death record for her sister Dorcas indicates that their parents were Daniel Troxell and Catherine Halfacre.[3] The 1880 census indicates that her parents were born in PA, but this seems unlikely. The 1880 census records for her other siblings list VA as their parents' birthplace.[4]

In 1836 she married William Russell in Washington County VA.[5] They had these children:

  • Martha Russell, 1837–1910
  • Robert Russell, 1840–Deceased
  • Catherine Russell, 1842–Deceased
  • George W Russell, 1844–1906
  • John w Russell, 1846–1918
  • Hiram C F Russell, 1849–1853
  • Loutitia Russell, 1851–1890
  • Drury Russell ,1853–1918
  • William C Russell, 1854–Deceased
  • Sarah Russell, 1856–Deceased
  • Martha Russell, 1858–Deceased
  • Jacob Russell, 1858–1869
  • Mary Russell, 1862–1920
  • Thomas F Russell, 1864–1918
  • Jacob Russell, 1870–1870

Notes on Parents

It is assumed that Ann is the daughter of Daniel and Christine Troxall, but she did not appear by name in a census before her marriage. Her marriage record in 1836 does not include parent names. The Washington County Historical Society has a copy of the will of Catherine Troxell, which lists her 12 children, including daughters Ann and Dorcas.

"Anna Troxall" Christened in Pennsylvania

There is a christening record in Lehigh Pennsylvania 1816 for Anna Troxall, daughter of Daniel and Christina Troxell.[6] The names here match, but the timing does not, as purported siblings of Ann all indicate they were born in VA. It doesn't make sense that Ann would be born and christened in a church in PA more than 500 miles away at this time. Also, Daniel and Christina Troxall continue to christen other children in the same area of PA while Ann and her siblings are growing up in Washington County Va. [7]

Other Records

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Ann by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Ann:

Hi Larry - Looking again at the details, where do you get the birth and death dates for Ann Troxell?

The source you have listed is Family Search, but the page referenced seems to be for her daughter Sarah. Looking at the Family Search record for Ann doesn't have any sources for the birth or death dates, so I prefer to list these as unknown on the merged record. Thanks! Bob

I agree that these are likely the same person, and I'll merge them. I'll include my bio info that discusses her parents and provides evidence she was not born in PA.

Some of the information in the entry for her father is speculative to me, and lacks source evidence (middle name David, birth date), so I'll mark those as uncertain. If you have sources for that, it would be great to see them.

Troxell-473 and Troxell-492 appear to represent the same person because: I do not know whether her name was "Ann" or "Anna" but these appear to be the same A Troxell.
