Biography

Notables Project
John Troyer is Notable.
John Troyer is/was a significant Ontarian .
"“[I have] suffered much by the Rebellious Americans, as they made no scruple to take all I had; and I came . . . to this Province in Order once more to enjoy Peace under His Majestys Good Laws.”[1]

John Troyer, born in 1753 in Pennsylvania, was a farmer, a businessman, a medical practitioner who used herbal remedies, and an exorcist.[2]

According to his Wikipedia page, he was a bit more than eccentric for his time. As a Tunker transplant from Pennsylvania to Norfolk County, Upper Canada (Ontario), he gained a reputation as a medical practitioner and was nicknamed the "Witch Doctor of Long Point." He was also a farmer and ran a grist mill and smithy.

John died in 1842 and is buried at the Troyer Homestead and Cemetery, Front Road, Port Rowan, Ontario.[3]

Research Notes

The eldest son: John D. Troyer born 1753, died at Simcoe Ontario, in 1842, married to Sophronia Reichenbach, John was known in Canada as Dr. John Troyer, he believed strongly in Witches, Ghosts, and Gobblins he used to set a trap in front of his bed at night to keep the witches away, this trap to this day is in the Museum at Simcoe Ontario. Micheal D. Troyer, born 1754, died in 1831 at Walnut Creek, Ontario, married Maria Reichenbach, of which my wife is a descendant. They settled on Sec. 9 N. W. in Walnut Township .It is believed the Reichenbachs were converted Jews, if so, there are many people in Holmes County that are the direct descendants of God's faithful servant of Abraham.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

I'm not sure why Michael is talked about in the bio, but most of the information about him appears to be incorrect, such as where he died and who he was married to.

Cathy I just want to make sure you are comparing the correct Michael Troyer because there are quite a few. This profile seems to have legitimate sources. Can you please provide more details?
Hey Linda,

Quite a character! There are quite a few sources out there for him other than the My Heritage and Ancestry entries. I added some verbiage and sources and categories (including the Notable Ontarians). I think the profile could be spectacular given how colorful he was if some time was spent filling-out the Bio from well sourced material.

Thanks for adding him!
