Biography

Friederich (Fred) Trump is the grandfather of well-known real estate mogul Donald Trump, Sr..

Friederich was born on 14 Mar 1869 in Kallstadt, Pfalz, Germany. He was christened in Kallstadt on 29 Mar 1869.[1]

See a detailed biography, titled "Frederick Trump" at Wikipedia here: [1]

Early life

As he couldn't find a job after finishing his apprenticeship as a hairdresser he left the Palatine in 1885 (which was part of the Kingdom of Bavaria during that time) without proper permission[2] and immigrated in 1885 to United States from Hamburg aboard the ship "Eider".[3] It's highly unlikely that he would have gotten permission to do so given that the 16 year old Friedrich Trump was a draftee.[4]

He first worked at a hairdresser in New York before he, like so many others before, went towards the West in search of a better life. In Seattle, Washington he ran a restaurant and he became a U.S. citizen there in 1892 whilst changing his first name to Frederick.[5]

In the Gold and Silver mine city Monte Cristo he was leading a hotel and a brothel. This is where he first got involved with politics and supported the regional candidate of the Democrats for the US Presidential Election. With just 27 years he himself was elected as Justice of the Peace. He then followed the miners in 1898 in the gold rush towards the North.[6]

He then opened a restaurant and hotel at Lake Bennett in the Canadian province of British Columbia and advertised for it not only with it's good kitchen but with their "private boxes for ladies".[7]

Whilst visiting his old home country he met Elisabeth Christ, whom he married in Ludwigshafen, Germany in 26 Aug 1902. The couple moved to New York but his wife Elisabeth was homesick. Friedrich Trump moved back to Germany with his young family and applied 1904 for repatriation in Germany. But the German Government deported him back to the United States, official reason was that he illegally emigrated and thus escaped the mandatory military service.[8]

In 1905 Friedrich Trump and his family returned to New York. He became a hotel director and invested in real estate.[9]

He died of influenza (Spanish flu) on 30 May 1918 in New York City, New York.[10]

He was buried on 02 Jun 1918 at the Lutheran All Faiths Cemetery, Middle Village, Queens County, New York.[11]

1898 Service in Spanish-American War?

The following listings are those of Fred D. Trump of Ohio, who registered for service in the Spanish American War (1898). His presence in the Washington state area between 1898 and 1902 may be a source of confusion for those seeking the census and military records of Friedrich Trump, and they are therefore listed here.

No record has been found to indicate that Friedrich Trump served the U.S. military in the Spanish-American war. His absence from the U.S. military record and the 1900 U.S. Census suggests he remained in Germany.

1900 German Military Record?

Friedrich Trump's middle name is not well known and has not been well documented. The reason this is important becomes clear when we seek his 1900 U.S. Census records and/or his records in Germany during the year 1900. Within the German record, there are several men named Friedrich Trump. Distinguishing between them is difficult.

If Friedrich's middle name was William or Wilhelm, then there definitely is a military record for this period:

Germany and Austria, Military and Marine Unit Histories, 1760-1933 Brandenburg Geschichte des Feldartillerie-Regiments General-Feldzeugmeister (1. Brandenburgischen) Nr. 3 lists one Friedrich Wilhelm Trump as having enlisted in a field artillery regiment at Brandenburg (2nd Light Artillery).

1914 - 1918 Registered in Bavarian Infantry Regiment?

Note that the following record is probably not that of Friedrich Trump (1869 - 1918) of New York, who is age 46 and clearly listed with a wife and children on the 1915 New York State Census. But when one searches for Friedrich's military record or World War I draft registration in the United States, it cannot be found.

What one does find are more than five men named Friedrich Trump listed as German casualties in World War I. Obviously, names may be confused. It is nevertheless worth noting that Friedrich seems to have had at least one cousin from Bavaria (Friedrich Trump, born 24 October 1873) who fought for Germany. It should also be noted that no U.S. military service prior to 1914 and no World War I draft registration have been found for Friedrich Trump of New York -- records that one normally expects to see. He presumably died before being asked to register for the draft.
