Beloit Man Burned to Death as Truck Upsets

(Consolidated News Service) Beloit, Wis., July 8. - Wallace [Walter] Trush, 1427 6th street, Beloit, was burned to death this morning when the army motor transport truck in which he was riding overturned 10 miles south of Oregon, Wis. Trush, a member of Co. L of the 128th infantry of the Wisconsin National guard, was en route to Camp Douglas with 68 [?] other members of the Beloit it for annual summer maneuvers. T. C. Flourey, 27, 748 Parker avenue, Beloit, and Phillip Hartley, 26, of Milwaukee, who were riding with Trush, were injured. Witnesses told police that the driver of the truck lost control of the machine and it careened across the highway before plunging into a ditch. Motorists reported that the truck was afire before it went out of control. Eight other men were said to have been riding in the machine with Trush. Members of Co. L, composed of 67 enlisted men and three commissioned officers, were being transported to Camp Douglas in trucks for the first time. Previously the unit made the trip to the training ground by train. In announcing the change in transportation last week, army officers said that moving the men by truck would simulate war conditions more than train travel would. Beloit police were notified of the accident by radio. Oregon, where the accident occurred, is about 39 miles north of Beloit in Dane county.
