Research Notes

Application for widow's pension mentions two minor children: Elmyra and William. Date of death of Prentiss is listed as 26th July 1863. Pension was admitted on 4 May 1864, payments backdated to 26 July 1863. An affidavit gives date of death as 4th July 1863. Marriage between Louisa Fritz and Prentiss Tryon took place on 12 Apr 1857 in Adams County, Indiana. Child Elmyra (written Elmiry) born on 10 Jun 1858. Child William A. Dolphus (Adolphus) born 2 Feb 1861. Were residing in Wabash township, Adams Co., Indiana at the date of application (1864?). On 24 Feb 1866 Frederick Houser or Hauser was appointed guardian of the two minor children. Louisa married Frederick Houser/Hauser on 18 Jan 1866 in Van Wert County, Ohio. Frederick was a resident of Hancock County, Ohio. Elmyra's name begins to appear spelled Almira in the records. Interesting note: the midwife who assisted in the birth of both children was Margaret Fritz, aged 19 in 1866 (sister of Louisa?). So also was Jane Fritz, aged 48 in 1866 (mother of Louisa?). On 21 June 1901 Louisa Houser filed an application for restoration of her widow's pension. Frederick Houser had died in Hancock County on 24 Apr 1888 and by June of 1901 she found herself without means of support. The widow's pension was again activated from 3 March 1901.[10][11][12]
