Newman was the youngest child and only surviving son of Andrew Tryon and Marilla Holcomb. He served in the First World War as a First Lieutenant in the US Army, having had two years' military experience at Connecticut Agricultural College. He appears never to have used the name Harold, being known as either Newman or H. Newman. He married Frances F. Durand (1906 - 1988) on September 30, 1931 in Hartford. They had two children: Newman Durand Tryon (m. Frances Thew in Lake Placid, Essex, NY) and Nancy Louise Tryon b in Elizabethtown, m. Eugene Melvine Barnhart in glendale, LA Co., California.[1]
