Biography

Charles was the son of Charles Tryon and Lament Brockway and was baptized together with his two brothers and two sisters in Middletown on 15 Oct 1775 or 1776.[1] The date is given in the source as 1775/6.

Charles Jr. married Martha Churchill in Middletown, 14 Mar 1791, Rev. Enoch Huntington officiating.[2] Martha and Charles were second cousins.

On 1 December 1792, Charles petitioned the Middlesex Court for divorce from Martha on the grounds of adultery.[3]

He was married to Sarah Smith Nov 17, 1797 (or 1798) in Middletown by Rev. Enoch Huntington.[4] They had at least one child, Lauranna Tryon Bailey.[5]

His estate is probated in early 1809. There is no will. Sarah Tryon signed a note assigning a (unreadable) Smith to administer the estate. Josiah Johnson and Josiah Tryon were the distributors of the estate. The wife received her 1/3 dower. The distribution in Oct 1810 is to heirs: Laurana Tryon, Nathaniel Tryon, Abijah Tryon, Sally Tryon, Anna Tryon, each receiving one fifth share.

Research Notes

His heirs are his children by his second marriage to Sarah, none from the first marriage to Martha. In Ruth's will she mentions a sister Mary Reed. Mary is a half sister through her mother's second marriage.

Named in daughter Ruth's will is "my sister Mary Reed and husband Jason Reed", but evidence as to whether Mary was a full sister or half sister remains to be found.
