The death of Mrs. Lucinda O. Grant widow of Levi Grant formerly of Beloit, and cousin of our President, produced a cloud of darkness and sorrow in many a home in Spring Prairie on Tuesday morning the 7th inst. We mourn her loss as a vicinity, and as a circle of friends.
Her remains were interred in the Cemetery at Beloit, in the family lot, it is a beautiful place. The funeral service took place on Wednesday, the 8th ins. Rev. Mr. Palmer of Spring Prairie Bapt. Church officiating.
She was forty eight years old, and died in full triumphs of faith. The nature of her disease was such as to cause the most intense agony, (cancer) but amid the pain and suffering of her last hours she could say “Thy will O Lord be done.”[4]
NOTE: Levi Grant was a distant cousin of Hiram Ulysses Simpson Grant, the President, their common ancestor being Matthew Grant.
Per the Arthur Hastings Grant's account of the Grant genealogy, Lucinda passed away in 1872, however, due to sharing the same name with her mother, there is a confusion of burial location and date of death for both mother and daughter. A findagrave memorial gives a death in 1890s. This has not yet been corroborated such that we can strongly dispute the Arthur Hastings Grant account.
In the Westcott genealogy, Lucinda's death date is given as 1873 and it says she was buried in Beloit, Wisconsin.[5]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Lucinda by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Lucinda:
Note that the obituary I found lists her as Lucinda O. Grant, as widow of Levi Grant, and aged 48. It also lists the death date as the day before the one here on this profile, the 7th rather than the 8th of May, 1872. The inclusion of her middle initial indicates her middle name probably was Octavia, the mention that she is the widow of Levi distinguishes her from her mother, but her age appears a bit wrong, as, if her birth date is correct, she was aged 50 years at death, not 48. Where did the date of death of 8th May come from? If the source is likely to be more authoritative than the newspaper item, then fine, otherwise perhaps it should be changed.
My source is a book written by Arthur Hastings Grant about 120 years ago. He had her middle name as Octavia and her death date as May 8th. I do trust him more than any newspaper from the time, but as I was not their when she died I cannot say for sure who is correct. Arthur's book is the definitive source on the family - it is amazing the effort and time he put into it's creation and the accuracy of it's contents.
Yes, I checked the source and it is Arthur's book. He also adds this: while Levi was sitting in his living room, "some person, unknown, fired a rifle at him from the outside through the window and killed him instantly.....H.R. Stiles". So according to H.R. Stiles, Levi was gunned down by an unknown assailant. How's that for random?
My Grant info typically comes from Arthur Hastings Grant's book on the family, printed 120 years ago, or from first hand knowledge. In this case, Arthur's book. It's possible he had an error in it, although his sources were likely Lucinda's children or grandchildren.
My knowledge n the Tryon family is nil (for the record).
does not represent anyone with those dates on record at the cemetery indicated.
It may have been an assumption of whomever created the findagrave record or conflation of two Lucinda's ... at any rate - we do have mother Lucinda (Tryon/Douglas) buried at that cemetery. This Lucinda's death record remains to be identified.
Person providing images for parents markers wrote with respect to Lucinda Octavia Tryon (whom we expect to be buried as a Grant): " I find no person by this name or dates in the cemetery database. I DO find a Lucinda Douglas, 1809-1888, the wife of Noah Tryon in plots OP-E-17-2,1 and 2. Pictures for Noah & Lucinda have been posted on their memorial pages."
A secondary source Early Annals of Newington "(Marriages 1820) April 23. Noah Tryon of Berlin, and Lucinda Westcott of Wethersfield." Another note elsewhere (Rockwell Family Foundation newsletter extracts) says of Justus Rockwell Jr that he never knew his father according to memories recorded by his grandson. This suggests Lucinda and the elder Justus were married a very short time and she may simply have reverted to her maiden name as a result, never really having been known as "Mrs. Rockwell".
I find a Lucinda Tryon marrying in Wisconsin 8 Jun 1859 (Wisconsin, Marriage Index, 1820-1907 Vol 1 p 46 ) but no spouse's name given. Checking on Douglas, I find a David Douglass married the same day, no spousal name given, marriage recorded same volume and page.
The 1860 census (Census Place: Plymouth, Rock, Wisconsin; Roll: M653_1430; Page: 571; Family History Library Film: 805430) has a David Douglass aged 76 b abt 1784 CT and wife Lucinda Douglass aged 62 b abt 1798 RI.
In the 1870 census I found David Douglas (one S) aged 87 b abt 1783 CT living in home of A. C. Douglas (of an age to be son). There is no Lucinda with him. Lucinda Douglas's Find a Grave is at Douglas https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=150898936 giving death date as 1874 and birth year as 1795. She is buried in the same cemetery as Noah Tryon, but no idea as to whether the graves are near one another or not.
A newspaper item on the death of Justus Rockwell (Justus Rockwell Jr) notes: "Ezra Tryon, of Nelson, Portage County, spent Saturday and Sunday with friends in this city. He came Friday to attend the funeral of his half-brother, Justus Rockwell." from The Summit County Beacon (Akron, OH), 13 Feb 1889, page 3.
I'm just trying to disentangle any confusion in the record between Lucinda and her mother.
