Biography

Frederick was born 12th July 1863 (date from death certificate, which gives birthplace as Lodus, New York). He is the son of William Tryon and Huldah Bettis. Frederick married Idella J. Powell in 1884 in Indiana [1] and they had a son William Louis Tryon the following year.

Idella died in Apr 1888 and Frederick married Nellie (Lillis) Silber 2 May 1891, Minetto, New York. Nellie was previously married to Charles Silber and had a son Ralph Silber. Ralph was adopted by Frederick. Ralph died in 1913, Nellie died in 1919, and Frederick is listed as a widow in the 1920 census.

Frederick married Ina Braun in about 1926 and they had a son Frederick Tryon about Jan 1928 in Pennsylvania. Frederic and Ina are found together in census and directory data through his death.

He died of acute myocarditis on 14 Dec 1943 at the age of 80 years, 5 months 2 days. He was buried in Prospect Hills, Guilderland, New York. Informant was his wife Ina. NOTE: mother's name given as Maria Bettis (Maria is probably Huldah's middle name).[2]

His youngest son, Frederick, died 30 Jul 1945, age 17, in the Philippines while serving in the Navy in WWII.

Occupational history

1892, 1900, 1910, and 1930: Machinist, 1920: Foreman, Steel Mill (Pittsburgh), and 1940: occupation crossed out and unreadable.

Research Notes

Frederick's life is difficult to follow as many dates and ages conflict, three wives, adoption, etc. Luckily there are lots of bread crumbs. The hard data is summarized as follows:

  1. 1865 census: Frederick is 1 10/12 and living with parents in Syracuse, NY.
  2. 1870 census: Frederick is 7 and living with parents in Lyons, NY.
  3. 1880 census: Frederick is 16 and living with parents in Sodus, NY.

  5. 1885 birth of son: 18 Mar 1885, William Louis Tryon, New Albany, Floyd, Indiana, (from William's draft cards)
  6. 1891 marriage record: 2 May 1891, Minetto, New York, Cer #: 7500, names on record: Frederick F Tryon, Nellie E M Silber, Nellie E Lillies
  7. 1892 census: Emily Tryon (40, US), Harriet Brown (53, England), Frederick Tryon (29), Ralph E. Tryon (5, US) in Oswego, NY.
  8. 1900 census: Frederick Tryon, b. Jul 1863, Nellie Tryon, wife, b. Feb 1875, Harriet Brown, mother-in-law, b. Apr 1829, Ralph Tryon, son, b. Nov 1886. Frederick and Nellie married 9 years and she has had one child. Syracuse, NY.
  9. 1910 census: F.F. Tryon (47) and N.E. Tryon (50) in Schenectady, NY. Married 19 yrs.
  10. 1915 census: Fred F. Tryon (57) and Nellie Tryon (67) in Schenectady, NY.
  11. William Louis Tryon (b. 1885) gives F.F. Tryon of Pittsburgh as his closest relative on his 1918 WWI draft registration.
  12. 1920 census: Frederick Tryon, 56, widow.
  13. 1930 census: Ina is living with her mother and son Frederick (2 3/12) in Bradfordwoods. Frederick is living in Erie, a boarder in another household.
  14. 1934-1939 Erie city directory: Fred F Tryon and Ina Tryon
  15. Frederick Franklin Tryon in the U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007 giving same birth date and parents names.
  16. 1940 census: Frederick Tryon, 76, Ina B Tryon, 47, Frederick Tryon Jr., 12, living in household of his sister Emma.
  17. 1943 death certificate giving b. 12 Jul 1863, d. 14 Dec 1943, witness wife Ina B. Tryon.
  18. Frederick F. Tryon in the Newspapers.com Obituary Index, 1800s-current, listing spouse: Ina Braun and children: William L. Tryon, Frederick B. Tryon.

Problems with marriage records

The NYS marriage index found on ancestry.com is difficult to understand. It simply lists names, dates, locations, and a certificate number. They are listed alphabetically and nowhere does it say bride, groom, officiant, or witness. You just need to find all the names associated with the certificate number.

In the 1891 marriage record for Franklin and Nellie, the index lists Frederick F Tryon, Nellie E M Silber, Nellie E Lillies. The middle initials E M strongly suggest this is Nellie E M Tryon who is found on Ralph's memorial. The marriage record for Ralph gives both Ralph E Silber and Ralph E Tryon as his name and lists his parents as Charles E Silber and Nellie E Lilise. [3] [4]

Therefore, Nellie was born Nellie Lilise (or Lillies), married Charles Silber, had son Ralph, and married Frederick Tryon who adopted Ralph.

Who is Harriet Brown?

She is found in the 1892 census, born in England in 1839. She is also found in the 1900 census, born in England in 1829, emigrated in 1831, and listed as mother-in-law. Nellie lists her mother from England in both 1900 and 1910 so Harriet appears to be Nellie's mother, but Ralph lists his mother's maiden name as Lilise on his marriage record. Harriet Lillis is found in the 1855, 1870, 1875, and 1880 census records of Oswego, NY, with a birth year of 1829 and location of England. She is married to William Henry Lillis. Their daughter is Emelia, b. 1849, in the 1855 census.

Possibly Harriet remarried to a Brown between 1880 and 1892.

Is Emily in the 1892 census Nellie? Nellie's birth year is 1875 in the 1900 census, 1860 in the 1910 census, and 1849 on her memorial, while Emily's is 1852 in the 1892 census. Ralph was born in 1886 so the 1900 census date is suspect. Harriet has a daughter Emelia born in 1849. Emily is surely Nellie. Sometimes she is Nellie E or Nellie E M Tryon so maybe the E is for Emily/Emelia.
