Andrew was born about 1812 in New York state (records vary 1805-1822). The almshouse record gives birthplace as New York City, New York. He is the son of Elijah Tryon and Rachel. He was a comb maker, jig filer, and saw filer. He had two children, Elisabeth and Elijah, both born 1843. He died in 1882.
The two children are both born 1843 based on census data but don't appear together in any census. We see only Elijah in 1850, age 7, and 1860, age 17, and only Elizabeth in 1865, age 22. Are they the same person? The 1865 does say female but also says currently in the Navy. Elijah was in the 13th Regiment, New York Heavy Artillery and mustered out in 1863 at Norfolk, VA. The 1882 almshouse record states he has two living children.
There is an Andrew Tryon in New York City, Ward 13, in the 1850 census [1] who is 28, from NY, is a comb maker, and has a child living with him named Elijah Tryon, age 7.
There is an Anderson Tryon in New York, Brooklyn, Ward 13 in the 1860 census [2] who is 47, from NY, is a "saw filer", and has 17 year old Elijah Tryon living with him, as well as 50 year old Josiah Tryon of Pennsylvania. In 1870 Brooklyn Ward 13 [3] is Andrew Tryon, age 56, born in England (at end of list of many from England but they are of a different dwelling so this may be a census mistake).
A 77 year old Andrew Tryon is found in 19 Jan 1882 in a Kings County Almshouse, father of Hartford, CT, and mother of Philadelphia, PA. Father was ivory comb maker, he was saw filer, has two living children [4]. It states that he is sick and unlikely to recover. A death record [5]five days later appears to be this same Andrew Tryon.
Based on all the above he must be the son of Elijah Tryon and Rachel. The occupation of his father is most diagnostic but also notable is the birthplace of parents and Josiah, his brother, living with him in 1860.
He shows up in many Brooklyn city directories in the 1860-70s, generally as a saw filer. In 1864 he and brother Josiah are both at same address, both saw filers. They are also both in the 1874 directory but at different addresses. There are two different Andrew Tryons in the directories in the same period, Andrew J. Tryon and Andrew F. Tryon who are carpenter and a piano dealer respectively, the latter being this Andrew's cousin.
There is a marriage record for Andrew Tryon and Sarah Ann Raynor, 13 Mar 1842 in New York City [6].
There is another marriage record for Andrew Tryon and Mary Sunflower, 4 Dec 1853 in New York City [7]. He is 40 and born NY.
This last may be completely unrelated but there is a death record for Emiline Stout, daughter of Josiah Andrew Tryon and Elizabeth Tryon, b. 1840, d. 7 May 1916 in Manhatten, New York [8]. We know of no Josiah Andrew Tryon.
In TNS_various_mentions we have an Andrew Tryon who married Saphronia or Sophrona Covell. Is this that Andrew? Seems unlikely as that was in Connecticut and the Andrew of this profile seems to have not left the NYC area.
