Biography

Joseph, son of John Tryon and Esther Smith, was born on 11 Jan 1759 in Litchfield, Litchfield, Connecticut.[1]

Joseph died on 4 Nov 1798 in Litchfield, Connecticut[2][3][4]

Probate

Initially, John Tryon and Moses Seymour were appointed administrators of Joseph's estate (27th Nov 1798, to be made a full account of to the court on 27 May 1799). Joseph's estate was administered solely John Tryon as administrator together with Ephraim Thinby (unsure of spelling of surname or his specific role) on 30 Jun 1800. The papers state that Joseph left as heirs one son and three daughters: Miranda (aged 16), Sally (aged 13), Joseph (aged 11) and Clarissa (aged 9). This would give Clarissa a birth year of about 1791. Grandfather and administrator John was appointed to administer "the small patrimony" to the best advantage of the heirs. The inventory of the estate suggests that though much of what Joseph owned was deemed old, there items — a pair of new silver sleeve buttons, new "merchant" shoe buckles, a pair of older silver shoe buckles, several other pairs of shoe buckles, a pair of silver knee buckles, other pairs of knee buckles, a silver stock buckle, several other stock buckles, and two silver brooches, a set of silver teaspoons, a broadcloth coat, a mixed cloth coat, an old greatcoat, a black satin vest, other vests, a pair of black satin breeches, a "fine holland shirt", several pairs of stockings including white cotton stockings (presumably for wear with the black satin), and the widow's apparel also consisted of a blue silk gown, a black silk gown, a newish chintz gown, a black silk cloak, a string of gold beads, a gold ring, a pair of stone jewels — all of which suggest that the family was, at least as far as dress, well placed.[5] NOTE: the later papers in this case are for Joseph Tryon died 1846, presumably this Joseph's son.

You're right, the baptismal records refer to THIS Joseph's grandchildren, son of his son Joseph. Too many Josephs!
