Biography

Jeremiah was born 16 Jan 1810 to James Tryon and Polly Saunders [1]

Jeremiah Tryon married Jane A. Foot (or Jane Abigail Foote) on 28 Oct 1832 in Bethlehem, Connecticut. Jeremiah is "of Litchfield."[2]

NOTE: According to son Truman's death certificate, his mother's name was Julia Tiffany, born in New York State.[3] The informant on Truman's death certificate (his son) was mistaken as to Truman's mother's maiden name. There is a Tiffany connection in the family in that jeremiah's sister Cornelia married a Joel Tiffany.

A published genealogy of the Foote family lists Jane Abigail Foote as wfie of Jeremiah Tryon. This lists a son, T. H. Tryon with the words "Hydetown, Crawford Co., Pa." This is Truman Harrison Tryon. He appears in many genealogies on Ancestry.com and Familysearch.org with a putative brother named Jeremiah, who "may possibly be the husband".[4] Abigail's father and brother were both named Truman Sherman Foote, which explains why Truman Tryon was so named.

Second wife

Jeremiah married Caroline Scott on 16 Sep 1850 in Watertown, Connecticut. The record shows Caroline then to have been a resident of "Bethelehem" [sic] and Jeremiah to have been a resident of Pennsylvania.[5] She is his second wife.

Jeremiah is mentioned, together with his wife, as founding members of the Congregational Church at Centreville on September 5, 1841. The church was founded at the Presbyterian Church in the same location. The church was later reorganized (April 24, 1859) with thirty-eight members, including Jeremiah Tryon.[6] This provides evidence that he was twice married.

With brothers James and David Tryon, Jeremiah was a settler in Pennsylvania in the area of eastern Crawford County[6]

News item

"City and Vicinity - Mr Jeremiah Tryon, of Tryonville, has given his attention for a few past seasons to the raising of garden vegetables and small fruits for the city market. He has an acre planted with strawberries, and has been successful in raising one of the finest crops of this table delicacy ever brought to our market. His varieties are the Triumph de Grand and Albany Seedling, which have no superior. Mr Tryon has one garden at Tryonville and another at Hydetown. The soil in both places is well adapted to garden produce, being gravelly, elevated, and free from frost. He has many customers in this city, and what he furnishes is sure to be fresh and of good quality."[7]

Obituary

"Mr Jeremiah Tryon, of Tryonville, who has been enfeebled by sickness for the last year, died yesterday morning. His family emigrated from Litchfield, Conn, many years ago and settled ten miles north of this city, giving to the place the name of Tryonville. Two brothers, James, over eighty years of age, and David, a few years younger, survive him. The deceased was a kind-hearted, upright man, beloved by his family and relatives, and held in high esteem by all who made his acquaintance. He leaves a widow. His funeral will take place at 11 o'clock this morning."[8]
