Biography

There are two Tryon men, Seldon Tryon and Elizur Tryon, born in Connecticut in 1812 and 1822 respectively, and appearing in the 1850 and 1860 census records of the Houston/Walker/Leon counties area of Texas. Both died in 1863.

Seldon was a farmer and had many slaves. He married and had their first child in North Carolina, lived in Arkansas in 1840, and lived in Texas by about 1843.

Elizur was a blacksmith. He married in Connecticut and had their first child, Seldon, there in 1848 and is in Texas by 1850.

It is almost certain that these two men are brothers. On other sites they are listed as sons of Elizur Tryon and they do fit with that Elizer's census records for 1820 and 1830. Beyond the census records and coincidence of name, there is nothing to connect them to parents. The two other Elizur Tryons in Connecticut can be eliminated because these two men don't fit into their census records but that just removes the relationship by commonality of name. The senior Elizur in Connecticut had over 20 slaves in the 1830 census and that is unusual among the Tryons of Connecticut. I think it is likely enough that they are sons of Elizur to attach them.

Research Notes

There is a family bible page posted on ancestry.com that gives birth dates of Elizur and many descendants. It is named there "Albert and Mary Tryon Family Bible." The earliest record is for Elizur Tryon, b. Mar. 28, 1822. There and on another page from this bible his name is spelled in the traditional way "Elizur".

The death certificate of his son Albert says Elizur was born in England but the informant also did not know the name of Albert's mother so the information is doubtful.

He appears NOT to be the E. C. Tryon who enlisted in Gould's Battalion (Cavalry, CSA) in 1862, as the records on Fold3.com show E. C. Tryon to have been 25 years old in 1862. That person was noted as "sick" at Camp Nelson in Nov.Dec. 1862, then sick in hospital at Austin, Arkansas in Jan./Feb. 1863.

I believe we have confused Elizar Tryon with Seldon Tryon as both were born in Connecticut and both were living in pre-Civil War Texas. The 1850 censuses show that these were two separate households, living in different counties. Seldon is mentioned in the slave schedules as a slave owner, Elizar never is. I've put up a proposed pending merger so that maybe we can concentrate on separating the two (or deciding they are the same person). There is no evidence that Elizar was in Texas in 1860, nor that he died in 1863 in Leon County, Texas (unless I'm missing something).
