Funeral

NORTH STOCKHOLM.

Feb. 16.—Everything is lively again after the storm.

Mr. David Tryon, of Ree Heights, Dakota, reached here Friday morning after a six days journey. He came to attend the funeral of his father, Benjamin Tryon, of Brookdale. The funeral was held in the M. E. Church at that place at 1 o'clock Friday. Sermon by Rev. Mr. Higby, of Norfolk, test, Revelations 2-17th; "To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth save he that receiveth it." It was one of the ablest of Mr. Higbee's [sic] many fine sermons. The people on Mr. Higbee's charge seem very anxious to retain so good a man as long as possible.[1]

Benjamin's estate commenced probation on 9 Dec 1885 in Stockholm, New York. The documentation names:

his executrix (his widow, Charlotte B. Tryon),

heirs-at -aw and next of kin:

Micajah Tryon of Stockholm,
David Tryon of Ree Heights, Dakota,
Sarah Etta [Sarahetta] Brush of Stockholm,
Elizabeth H. Grandby of Morley, NY
Emma L. [sic, F.] Curtis of Morley, NY.

Text of Will

In the name of God Amen. I Benjamin Tryon of the town of Stockholm in the County of St. Laurence [sic] and State of New York of the age of seventy four years and being of sound mind and memory do make publish and declare this my last will and testament in manner following that is to say—:

First I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Charlotte B. Tryon all my household goods of every kind and nature whatsoever such as furniture, beds, bedsteads, bedding, [unreadable word], stoves, stove pipe, furniture for stoves, fancy articles, pictures, library, &c. and in fact everything of a personal nature that may be in my house at the time of my decease.

Second, I hereby direct my executrix to pay all my just debts and funeral expenses out of the residue of my personal estate if there should be a sufficient quantity to pay the same.

Third – in case the personal property hereby set apart to pay my just debts and funeral expenses shall fail to pay the same I hereby authorize my executrix to sell and convey a sufficient quantity of my real estate to pay the balance of all my just debts and funeral expenses.

Fourth, I give and bequeath all the rest residue and remainder of my personal estate goods and chattels of what nature of kind soever (after paying my debts and funeral expenses) to my said wife Charlotte B. Tryon.

Fifth. I give and bequeath to my said wife Charlotte B. Tryon the sole use of all my real estate consisting of a farm of forty acres of land together with the appurtenances thereto belonging for her sole use and benefit for and during her natural life whom I hereby appoint sole executrix of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made.

Sixth. After the decease of my wife Charlotte B. Tryon I give and bequeath whatever there may be left of my real estate to my youngest daughter Emma F. Curtis wife of Lebbius Curtis upon condition that she shall pay to my daughter Sarahetta Brush wife of Edward L. Brush the sum of two hundred dollars to my daughter Hannah E. Grandy wife of John Grandy the sum of two hundred dollars to my son Micajah Tryon the sum of five dollars and to my son David Tryon the sum of five dollars conditional however that if any portion of my real estate shall be sold to pay my debts and funeral expenses the amounts to be paid by my daughter Emma F. to my daughters Sarahette and Hanna E. shall be reduced in the same ratio as the original value of the forty acres of land shall be reduced by such sale.

Seventh. I hereby direct that in case my daughter Emma F. Curtis shall die without a child or children then the land hereby devised to her shall be equally divided between my daughters Sarahetta Brush and Hanna E. Grandy or their heirs but in case my daughter Emma F. Cursit should die leaving issue then such “such” [sic] issue shall succeed to the rights of their mother and be entitled to the mothers share providing they shall pay the legacies set for for the mother to pay.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this fifth day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy six.

Benjamin Tryon.[2]
