Obituary

"Tryon-Near Huntsville, Randolph couty, Missouri, Bro. Peter Tryon, in the seventy-ninth year of his age. Bro. Tryon was born in Greenville, Green county, New York, April 2d, 1813, and married Sarah Ann Stevens April 11th, 1833. He united with the church about the year 1835, having been baptized in New York by Elder Uzziel Stevens. About the year 1843, having then a family of five children, he removed from the Empire State to Ohio, passing through Kirtland on the way, which was found to have been deserted by the Saints with the exception of a few families. After living eleven years in Huron county, Ohio, there being then eight children, the family again moved westward, settling in Knox county, Illinois in 1854. On Christmas, 1889, he and his aged companion, with the family of his son Lewis, moved to Huntsville, Missouri, where he died on the morning of March 10th, 1892. During the dark and cloudy day his faith continued firm and unshaken. Holding aloof from the various factions, in 1862 he united with the Reorganization on his original baptism. He leaves a widow and seven children four sons and three daughters, his youngest daughter having preceded him to the great beyond over sixteen years ago. His confidence in the latter day work increased with his years, and at last he was gathered home as a shock of corn fully ripe. Although he had been ailing for some time the end came rather suddenly and unexpectedly, but the grim messenger found him well prepared, and his surviving relatives mourn not as those who have no hope. Funeral services were conducted on the 11th by Elder Duncan Campbell, using the text, "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord," etc., Rev. 14:13." [1]

Research Notes

This profile once had a middle name for him of Drury. There is no evidence for that and may have resulted from some mix-up as his sons Simon Peter and Peter Gilbert married Drury sisters.

I believe that the date of birth is correct; however, the birthplace is more likely Canandaigua, Ontario, NY, USA, or Greeneville, Greene, NY, USA. The current listed place of birth is Danby; however, I believe that Danby is in Tompkins County not Greene County. The LDS Church records show a preference to the Canandaigua birth place with Greeneville as the alternate. Several of Peter's brothers were born in Greenville, as were other Tryon's.

I believe that the place of birth should be Greenville, Greene, NY, USA.
