Biography

John Tubb was a British Home Child and was one of many Children Transported to Canada.

John was born September 13, 1893 in Warwickshire, England. He was a son of William Tubb and Janet Ramsay (Turnbull) Tubb.[1]

In 1901, the family was living in Yardley, Worcestershire, near Birmingham.

In 1904, his mother passed away at the age of 44 leaving his father with a large family to support.

By 1905, John was in the care of a Middlemore Children's Immigration Home in Birmingham. These homes, operated by John Throgmorton Middlemore, were philanthropic homes operated in order to provide for the poor children of England with the stated goal of sending them abroad to begin a better life. Records indicate his father was living at 2 Fox Crescent, Fernley Road and that his mother was deceased. Many Middlemore children ended up in Canada and other Commonwealth countries, working homes or on farms with a promise of vocational training. John arrived in Halifax with his brothers Philip and Thomas Samuel aboard the ship Siberian. 142 children in total were transported that day, bound for Fairview Home, a home operated by Middlemore's organization.

He was placed first with James Thompson, a farmer in Smith's Creek, New Brunswick. He was then placed with Hugh McElroy, a farmer in Rockwell in 1907. Third, he was placed with Hamilton Yeomans of Sussex in 1909.[2]

By 1911, he was a boarder in the home of Benjamin Mallory of Studholme Parish along with his brother Philip.

In 1918, he enlisted to served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force however it is unclear whether he saw actual service as only his attestation paper is available. It indicates he did not know his date of birth. His next of kin stated was his brother, Sam Thomas Tubb. He listed his trace as farmer and his address as Mount Hebron, Kings County.[3]

He returned to England to marry Clara Elizabeth Rothwell on February 11, 1919 at Chorley, Lancashire.[4]

They lived in Kings County and raised a family.

John passed away in Sussex at on August 26, 1975 at the age of 81 and was interred there at the Kirkhill Cemetery.[5]
