Biography

John Tuchet was the second son of John Tuchet, Lord Audley and Anne Echingham, his wife. As his older brother James was born in 1463–64,[1] John was presumably born in late 1460s. Like his brother, John took part in the Cornish Rebellion of 1497; and unlike his brother who beheaded for his part, John was spared and eventually pardoned. This is presumably the reason for the curious phrase, "to rewarde my sonne John Audley if he come to have the kinges grace" in his mother's will, dated 11 November 1497.[2]

In 1499 John Audley conspired in a plot to free the Earl of Warwick and Perkin Warbeck from the Tower of London He was subsequently indicted for his part in the rebellion, though no trial is recorded.[3] and on 12 February 1504/05 as John Audley of Woolwich, Kent and Stawey, Somerset, he was granted a general pardon.[4] Stowey, Somerset, had been held by his brother James before his attainder, but at this time was held by James' brother-in-law John Bourchier, Lord Fitzwarren.[5]

John married Isabel Mylbery, allegedly an illegitimate daughter of Edward IV.[6] The principal source on Isabel Mylbery is a manuscript from circa 1510 by Sir Thomas Wriothesley, Garter King at Arms. It shows the arms of "Johannes Awdeley, frater Jacobi domini de Awdeley" (John Audley, brother of James lord of Audley) impaled by those of "Dame Isabelle uxor eius" (Dame Isabel, his wife), denoting their marriage. John's arms are those of the Audley family together with a crescent, the traditional cadency mark for a second son.[7]

Research Notes

Antiquarian claims

Chetwynd's History of Pirehill Hundred (Staffordshire), in a manuscript dated c.1670, presents a pedigree of the Audleys showing that "Johes Touchet" married "fil. noth. Regis E. IV., ob. s.p.".[8] (bastard daughter of King Edward IV, who died without issue).

A pedigree of the family of Tuchet dated 1597, apparently drawn up for George, Lord Audley (later 1st Earl of Castlehaven), 3x-great-nephew of John, shows "Joħes Audeley filius 2 p'r Thoma Patris Georgii Audeley de Buglautõ in vita A° 1596 existensis"[9] (John Audley, second son, father of Thomas father of George Audley of Buglawton alive in 1596).
