Joseph was raised on his parents farm, he also choose that as a profession for him self as well. On 27 Sep 1855 Joseph and Mary Williams were married in Fayette, Illinois. By 1870 they were a family of six, their children are as follows

Elizabeth 1861
John 1864
Sophie 1868

On the 15 of September of 1863 he was drafted into the service. He was 28 years old, a private in the Ninth Infantry.
