Biography

M.L. Cockrum's tombstone is inscribed as follows: Mother thou was mild and lovely, Gentle as the summer breeze.

The book cited below says he married 2nd wife, margaret Tucker Crow (widow) on 12/08/1861, however, his first wife did not pass away until 04/17/1864 and their last child was born 05/05/1862 in B'ham AL. Find a Grave reference below states they were married July 31, 1865 which would be after the death of his first wife. Margaret passed away at 33 yrs old on March 5, 1877. According to find a grave they had the following 6 children: Rachel 1866-1867, Elizabeth Alice 1868-1868, Artimus Jesse 1869-1949, Margaret Druscilla 1873-1942, James Vinyard ?-?, and Alfred Settles (Suttles) 1877-1958.

Marriage license source below shows Margaret L. Tucker married James Crow on Aug 23, 1860 in St. Clair County, AL. Her father, Joseph Tucker, had to give consent because she was under 18 years of age. James F. Crow was of lawful age to marry without parental consent.

John and several of his children from his first marriage died in TX. Based on the births of his children he would have had to marry his third wife, Mary Jones (nee cline), between 1877-1879. Their last child I have info on at this time was born 1885.

Research Note

Death July 24, 1885. This could be the death record for Margaret Tucker if her marriage to John Wharton Cockrum Jr. was not recognized due to him not divorcing his first wife: "Find A Grave Index," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QV2Z-XT6W : 13 December 2015), Margaret A Tucker, 1885; Burial, Tyler, Smith, Texas, United States of America, Oakwood Cemetery; citing record ID 64345399, Find a Grave, http://www.findagrave.com. However, this could also be Margaret Cockrum's mother's death record.
