Biography

Around 1865-66, Armistead remarried a woman named Camilla after Catherine's death. The marriage was a disaster and Armistead ended up kicking her out. The 1870 Census shows him living with 3 women named Ward who I assume were grandmother, mother and daughter. Armistead was accused of having an affair with the youngest, Becky Ward and possible fathering a child with her. He resigned from his role of Clerk at Falling River Church over this, but later asked to be reinstated. From what I can tell, he never admitted to a relationship with Becky. There are a number of long and involved depositions where neighbors and family members describe Camilla as being difficult. One neighbor said she seemed "idiotic". She bounced around living with Chambers and Anne Marie Driskill (who is referred to as Priss in the papers) and James H Tucker families, but nobody could support her. Eventually, Armistead let her come back to his property where she lived in an out building until he got very sick. At that time, she moved into the house with him and nursed him back to health, after which he agreed to let her live in the house with him again. They all lived and slept in one room, including Becky and her child!. This story came from Virginia Chancery Cases. There are more cases filed by Armistead's family members for a share of his estate. Needless to say it was a mess!.
