John Tufton, 4th Earl of Thanet was born on 7 August 1638. He was the son of John Tufton, 2nd Earl of Thanet and Lady Margaret Sackville. He died on 27 April 1680 at age 41, unmarried. He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England. He was educated at Queen's College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Steyning in 1679.2 He succeeded to the title of 16th Lord Clifford [E., 1299] on 24 November 1679, de jure.1 He succeeded to the title of 4th Earl of the Isle of Thanet, co. Kent [E., 1628] on 24 November 1679.
He was buried at Raynham, Kent.
