A PIONEER OF HANCOCK COUNTY

John R. Tull of Payson, Illinois, Celebrates His Ninetieth Birthday

He is an Educated Gentleman, a Musician and a Farmer.

One of the oldest residents of Adams County is Mr. John R. Tull, father of Mrs. Isaac Grove, of Payson, who celebrated his 90th birthday March 26, a week ago yesterday.

Mr. Tull was born in Sussex County, Delaware, in 1807, and is now the oldest person in Payson Township. When a young man he moved with his parents to Ohio, but returned to Delaware to marry Miss Nancy Langford.

They lived in Ohio until 1836, when they moved to Hancock County, Illinois, and settled on a farm there, living on the same farm until the death of his wife, which occurred August 10, 1889. Mr. Tull and his wife lived together sixty - three years, three months and six days, celebrating their Golden Wedding in 1876.

Mr. Tull during his young manhood met and talked with the two famous Indian chiefs, Black Hawk and Keokuk. He said Keokuk was a handsome Indian. At that time Fort Madison, which was four miles from Mr. Tull's farm, consisted of only three log cabins. Nauvoo, the Mormon settlement was just ten miles from Mr. Tull's place, he has often seen Joseph Smith and was there during the Mormon war. In 1854 he was ordained Deacon of the Methodist Episcopal Church by Bishop Thomas A. Morris, and continued to preach until about eighteen years ago, when he lost his eyesight.

At the same time he carried on the nursery business and is well versed in flowers and fruits and many beautiful and rare trees are still to be found on his farm in Hancock County. He was a musician and has three daughters living, but has made his home with Mrs. Grove since the death of his wife. Transcribed as published by Karen Brewer
