John Tullis was born September 27, 1762 in Berkeley County Virginia. Court records dated March 17, 1778 show that after his father's death "John Tullis, who is 15 years of age, bound to John Rion to teach him the trade of a fuller."
Marriage records from Berkeley County show that he married Eleanor Conwell on April 25, 1799. She was a daughter of Arthur Conwell and his wife Eleanor Davenport, and was born January 27, 1783 in Virginia. On the marriage bond Eleanor’s brother-in-law John Bull signed as suretor. They moved to Greene County Ohio around 1807, and from there later moved to Wayne County Indiana, where John, who was a farmer, purchased the southwest quarter of Section 21, Township 17, Range 13 from David Bradbury on May 1, 1818. Ezekiel Bradbury, a son of David's, would later marry their daughter Nancy Tullis. Records from the Bradbury family record that John ran a fulling mill in Wayne County where Ezekiel had worked. John and Eleanor's son David D. Tullis eventually located in Iroquois County Illinois, where a biographical sketch of him in a County history records: “David D. Tullis, proprietor of livery and feed stables, was born in Wayne County Indiana December 4, 1822, and lived there six years, when with his parents he moved to Randolph County Indiana, where he lived two years, during which time his father died. In company with his mother and family he then moved to Shelby County, where they lived until 1839. . . . In 1850 his mother died at the residence of her daughter in Wayne County Indiana. . . . His parents John and Eleanor (Conwell) Tullis were natives of Virginia, where they were married. They moved from Virginia to Middleton Ohio, and thence in 1816 to Wayne County Indiana. They raised ten children, five boys and five girls, all of whom married and raised families.” Records show John died August 19, 1833 and that Eleanor died March 15, 1851. The Family Bible of John and Eleanor exists, which lists their dates of their births and deaths, and the names and marriage dates of their children, including their daughter Nancy Tullis Bradbury.
