Advocate (8 Feb 1873) - THE LATE MRS. FLOOD, SANDHURST (aka Bendigo)
Mrs. Flood, mother of Messrs. P. and E. Flood, coachbuilders, Sandhurst, died recently in that city, of which she had been an old resident, and one who was highly respected in the community.
Mrs. Flood's remains were interred in the White Hills Cemetery on Monday, the 3rd inst., and were followed to the grave by an unusually large concourse of mourners.
One hundred members of the H.A.C.B.S. preceded the hearse, after which followed the workmen employed in her sons' establishment, followed by one hundred carriages and forty horsemen.
Upon arriving at the cemetery the Rev. Dr. Backhaus read the funeral service, after which, in a few feeling remarks, be paid a well-merited tribute of respect to the memory of the deceased, and a high compliment to her family, stating that she had not neglected to educate them in their youth in the fear of God, and that they in return had paid attention to her in her old age and during a long and protracted illness.
The funeral moved from her son's residence, Bridge street. R.I.P. BALLARAT CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE SOCIETY (Geelong Advertiser)
"Hedge schools existed in this district about eighty years ago (1840 - 1850). :One of these was built near Derryoober mountain in the parish of Woodford, and the other on a hill known as King's Hill over looking the little town of Woodford.
Tradition tells us they were taught four subjects - reading, writing, arithmetic, catechism. Slates were used and burned charcoal for a pencil. Mr. Carroll was the teacher in Derryoober.
Somewhat later about sixty years ago school was carried on in private houses. tne school in particular was held at TURNER's House in the village of WOODFORD. Another house is now built in it's stead and is occupied by people of the name Hennessy. Robert Turner was the name of the old schoolmaster. He was a Protestant and is supposed to be a relative of the present Turner family that lives in Woodford."
