Martin Turnbaugh (1836-1909) ...In '61 I married Emily Domer.......I signed a lease in February, 1864 to run one of the Bell's grist mills. The Bell's supplied my house, a stable and a garden as well as cord wood for the mill, oil and grease for light and maintaining machinery. I agreed to run the mill on shares, conduct myself in a business-like manner striving to please customers. I had to keep the mill swept clean, not wasting sweepings, screenings, grain, oil or grease, The fires in the water house had to be kept up in freezing weather to prevent the mill from being stopped or injured by freezing. Dams, banks and splash boards were to be kept in good repair; all running gears of machinery to be kept well oiled. I only stayed until May--much preferred farming and farming season was upon us. When that season played out, I enrolled in the Grand Army of the Republic, December 1, as a Private in Co. G, 12th Cavalry, Pennsylvania volunteers. I was honorably discharged at Winchester, Virginia on July 20, 1865...i
