Biography

Birth

William Madden Turnbaugh was born on 15 June 1847 in Pleasant Hill, Pike, Illinois, United States to John Cottel Turnbaugh (1816-1873) and Ruth McLain (1808-1852). His mother died when he was 4.

He left home and joined the United States Army after his mother died and his father remarried. He also changed the spelling of his last name at that time to Turnbeaugh from Turnbaugh. He was a Private in Company E, 18th Regiment of the Missouri Infantry in the Civil War according to his headstone.

Marriage and Family

He married Malissa Cherizade Averett (1853-1927). She came to the marriage with 2 daughters from her first marriage in 1866 to William Thomas Riggs. They were Cherizade Bernice Riggs (1867-1919) and Mary Ellen Riggs (1869-1951).

Occupations

His headstone states that he was the owner and operator of the Silver Reef Mine and the town Marshall for Washington City in Utah.

Peterson (1873-1945) on 22 July 1905 in Boise, Ada, Idaho.[2] Ruth died on 27 September 1929 in Washington County, Utah, United States.
  2. Elijah William Turnbeaugh was born on 11 January 1873. He died on 30 May 1895 in Prescott, Yavapai, Arizona, United States.
  3. Emma Lavern Turnbeaugh (Called Savrrna on the 1880 Census where Emma doesn't appear.) was born on 8 November 1874 in Washington, Utah Territory. She married William Jasper Custer (1864-1952) on 4 February 1892 in Prescott, Yavapai, Arizona. [3] Emma died on 2 February 1930 in El Centro, Imperial, California, United States.
  4. Melissa Helen Turnbeaugh was born on 23 December 1875. She married 1) John W. Redwine on 31 October 1891 in Maricopa County, Arizona[4] and 2) John E. Riordan on 29 August 1910 in Boise, Ada, Idaho. [5] Melissa died on 23 November 1953 at Parker Dam, San Bernardino, California, United States.
  5. John J. Turnbeaugh was born on 4 August 1877 in Silver Reef, Washington, Utah Territory. He died on 9 August 1877 in the same place.
  6. Edgar Elisha Turnbeaugh, twin, was born on 21 December 1878. He married 1) Nellie May Blazzard (1886-1920) on 21 October 1907 in Washington, Washington, Utah, United States and 2) Jennie Reed (1886-1967) in 1934. Edgar died on 8 December 1945 in Las Vegas, Clark, Nevada, United States.
  7. Edna Elizabeth Turnbeaugh, twin, was born on 21 December 1878. She married Dan Goodwin (1871-1943) on 22 December 1898 in Yavapai County, Arizona. Edna died on 16 May 1952 in Boise, Ada, Idaho, United States. [6]
  8. James Monroe Turnbeaugh was born on 1 October 1880. He died on 13 June 1881 in Washington, Washington, Utah, United States.
  9. Joseph Lawrence Turnbeaugh was born on 25 January 1882. He married Nancy Ellen Blazzard (1884-1952) on 11 May 1909 in Saint George, Washington, Utah. Joseph died on 7 May 1944 in Saint George, Washington, Utah, United States.
