Biography

Scottish flag
Robert Turnbull was born in Scotland.

Robert was born in Roxburghshire, Scotland about 1770. His parents are unknown, but his father may be William.

According to a history of Elmira written in 1938[1], he served in the British Army. After he was discharged, he married Ellen, who eventually emigrated to Stark, Illinois, United States and is buried in Elmira Cemetery[2] in the 1790s. They had at least four children[1].

  1. William (1798 - 1882)
  2. Robert (1799 - 1874)
  3. John (1806 - 1888)
  4. Frank

Robert died in Scotland.

Research Notes

The Turnbull Clan Association database[3] states various facts about him. But, there are no sources that link him to any of his children or his wife or any of the information provided there under either the name of Robert or Alexander or any combination. As his purported wife's grave names him as Robert[2], that is probably his name. The only information about him is found in the Elmira history as given in his biography.

Possible baptisms are assuming his father is William:

  • baptised on 28 Mar 1758 at Oxnam, Roxburghshire[4]
  • baptised 26 August 1759 at Sprouston, Roxburghshire[5]
  • baptised on 24 November 1762 at Bedrule, Roxburghshire, the son of William[6].

And so on. Nothing is proven. (Dickson-4413 23:09, 12 February 2024 (UTC))
