Biography

A Joshua Turnbull was christened on 7 Dec 1783, in Trimdon, Durham, England, parents Thomas Turnbull and Margaret.^[1]

Joshua married Johanna Oliver on 21 May 1805, in Sedgefield, Durham, England.^[2]

Joshua and wife Johanna had at least six children, Jane born in Sedgefield, Durham, on 17 May 1808^[3] Mary, Jane Thomas, Elizabeth and John christened on 15 Dec 1820 at Sedgefield.^[4]

Joshua was living with his daughter Mary and her husband William Worthy and their growing family at the time of the England censuses in 1841 (listed as Joseph),^[5] 1851^[6] and 1861.^[7] Joseph's wife Johanna was not present on any of these occasions, suggesting that she had died before 1841. Joshua was 66, a widower in 1851, farm servant, and 77, agricultural labourer , widower, in 1861. In 1841 and 1851 the family lived at Four Lane Ends, Houghton Le Spring, Durham and in 1861 at Hallgarth Street, Elvet, Durham.

A Joshua Turnbull died in Durham in the last quarter of 1861, age 78.^[8]

Research Notes

The birth record of a Joshua Turnbull in Trimdon, Durham, might not be the right one - I have no other link between Joshua and the possible parents Thomas and Margaret. The death record, for an 78 year old Joshua Turnbull in Durham in 1861 matches the birth record in terms of age.
