"By the late eighteenth century, a string of plantation manors stood on the plateau overlooking the Appomattox River: "Clermont" (Cole, later Jordan), "White Hill" (Turnbull, later Gilliam and Friend), and the Taylor plantation (Figure 4.16). The Bate (later Hare) plantation lay west of the plateau bluff, but on an isolated knoll of similar elevation (100 feet above sea level). "[1]
