Biography

Walter worked as a parochial schoolmaster in Melrose.[1]

Walter married Euphemia Dickson in 1796 after giving their names for marriage in both her parish of Hawick[2] and his parish of Melrose.[3]

1796 January 1st - Mr Walter Turnbull of the parish of Melrose and Euphan Dickson of this parish gave up their names for proclamation in order to marriage. 2/6 to the poor.[4]

1796 Jan 2 - Booked for marriage Walter Turnbull in this parish and Euphemia Dickson in the parish of Hawick. Cautioner David Kyle.[5]

When they married, the 100 acres of land that Euphemia had inherited from her father, William Dickson, became part of Walter's estate. He sold Cartlahole in Melrose in 1797 to Dr. Robert Douglas, the minister in Galashiels. In turn this land was sold to Sir Walter Scott and became the location of Abbotsford House.[6][7][8][9]

He died in Melrose on 18th December 1804.[10]
