Biography

Flag of Suffolk (adopted 2017)
Lucy (Turner) Gilbert was born in Yoxford, Suffolk, England.

Lucy Agnes (Turner) Gilbert was born on 14 Nov 1847 in Yoxford, Suffolk, England. Her parents were Thomas Metcalfe Blois Turner (1809 - 1847) and Herbertina (Compton) Gilbert (1815 - 1913). Her birth was registered in the December quarter of 1847 and she was baptised on 12 December 1847 in Yoxford, Suffolk.[1][2]

Her siblings were...

  1. Henry Compton Turner, 1835 - 1835 (see research note)
  2. Thomas Compton Turner, 02 Jan 1837 - burial date 21 Jun 1840
  3. Lucretia Ann Turner, 01 May 1839 - burial date 01 May 1839
  4. Grace Eliza Turner, 12 Jul 1840 - 1899
  5. Herbert Charles Turner, 21 Jun 1842 - 25 Feb 1895
  6. Samuel Compton Turner, 29 Sep 1845 - 1900

Lucy's family lived in Bombay, India, and her father was a captain in the Bombay Engineers in the East India Company Service. He died in July of 1847, and was buried 9 Jul 1847.[3] After his death, her mother returned to England, and three months later, Lucy was born in Yoxford, Suffolk. Her mother later moved to London, and that's where the family settled.

In 1851, 3 year old Lucy was living in Saint George Hanover Square with her mother and brothers, Herbert and Samuel. Her sister, Grace, was living a few houses down in her grandfather's home.[4]

In 1861, 13 year old Lucy was living in London with her mother and siblings.[5]

1867

Lucy married William Schwenck Gilbert (1836 - 1911) on 6 Aug 1867 in Kensington, London.[6] William was half of the famous duo, Gilbert and Sullivan. He was a poet, librettist, dramatist, and illustrator. His career with Arthur Sullivan produced 14 comedic operas.

Lucy and William did not have any children of there own, but they loved children and made a yearly donation to the Children's hospital in Chelsea. They also loved animals and had several pets, including exotic pets. One of his obituaries wrote of a monkey house that was in their garden. In their later years, they unofficially adopted an actress that worked with William. Nancy Macintosh became like a daughter to the couple.

In 1871, 23 year old Lucy was living in Kensington, Middlesex, England with her husband and his niece. The family employed 3 servants, a housemaid, cook and a footman. Alice, their niece was 11 years old and was listed as a scholar. She was the daughter of William's sister, Jane.[7]

In 1881, 33 year old Lucy was living in Kensington, London, Middlesex, England with her husband. The household employed a butler and 3 domestic servants.[8]

Grims Dyke in Harrow Weald

In 1891, 43 year old Lucy was living in Grims Dyke, Harrow Weald, Harrow, Middlesex, England with her husband. Their household had grown with William's success and now employed 7 servants. William was listed as retired, and at this time, he would have been in the middle of his "Carpet quarrel" with Arthur Sullivan. It was effectively the end of their partnership, but they were able to come together again to create 3 more productions.[9]

Nancy Macintosh

In 1911, 70 year old Lucy was living in St George Hanover Square, London, England with her husband and Nancy MacIntosh. Lucy and William considered Nancy a daughter. The household employed 9 servants.[10]

Later the same year, Lucy was widowed when her husband William drowned in the pond on their property. He was swimming with Miss Winifred Emery and Miss Preece. Neither women could swim and one called for help when she got too deep into the water. William is thought to have had a heart attack while trying to save her. In different newspaper articles, both women were named as the one needing help.[11][12]

Sir William Schwenck Gilbert's Funeral[13]

Sir William Gilbert died May 29, 1911 and his estate went into probate August 9th. His wife Lucy and Nancy Macintosh were listed as beneficiaries to his estate. William's Will[14]

Lucy died on 12 Dec 1936 aged 89.
