Biography

Second Wife of Joseph Edson

Joseph Edson married (second) Mary Turner, daughter of George and Mary Turner. Her first name is established from references to his relict and widow Mary Edson in his estate records, [1] and her maiden surname and marriage to Joseph Edson are bound together in the March 1697 estate settlement of her father, George Turner. [2] Joseph and Mary were married in Bridgewater on November 2, 1686. [3]

Joseph and Mary had the following children:

  1. Benjamin Edson (1687-), b. 1687 [4]
  2. Samuel, b. August 28, 1689 [4]
  3. Mary, b. probably sometime in 1688-1691 (based on assumption that she was a daughter of Joseph's second wife, but not treated as a minor in his 1712 estate records [1]), m. May 23, 1716 John Lothrop [3][5][4]
  4. Timothy, b. about 1694 (based on being a minor but old enough to select his guardian in 1712 estate record[1]) [4]
  5. Susanna, b. about 1698 (based on being 14 in 1712 estate record[1]), m. April 2, 1723 Solomon Johnson [3][5] [4]

Published Genealogical Information

  1. ) Turner Essay; page 129-132: Finter notes that George Turner died on 7 Dec 1695 intestate, and that there was dispute among his heirs with regard to the assets of the estate; as a result of a mediation council by family appointed judges, a settlement was drafted which is archived in Plymouth Co. PR 21464. The following is a direct quote from an abstract provided by Finter in her essay:
    1. ) "Whereas George Turner of Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., died 1695 intestate, there being difference and disagreement about the settlement of the estate between the widow Mary Turner and his children, John Turner, and Elihu Brett that married Hannah Turner and Joseph Edson that married Mary Turner: on March 1696/7, the said Elihu Brett Jr., in behalf of his mother-in-law Mary Turner, entered into a covenant of £100 apiece "to sand to the determination & distribution of the whole estate" by those men whom they chose and nominated in said bond: Capt. Thomas Hayward, Samuel Allen, and Edward Fobes, all of Bridgewater. [They determined that]: all deed of gift from George Turner to Elihu Brett or Joseph Edson or from Brett or Edson to George Turner which he had in his possession at his decease to remain to John Turner, Not Brett or Edson; John Turner to pay Joseph Edson £2 14 s; Elihu Brett to pay John Turner £2 18 s; John Turner to pay "his mother Mary Turner" £6 6s 8d; 20; John Turner to pay "his mother Mary Turner" 20 shillings annually for her natural life; Elihu Brett to pay "his mother-in-law Mary Turner" ten shillings annually; said widow Mary Turner to have her bed and bed clothing during her natural life and at her decease to be returned to her son John Turner and she may continue to dwell in east end of said John Turner's house. {Editorial (RRB): this estate settlement establishes, beyond all doubt, from a primary record that Joseph Edson's second wife was Mary Turner, daughter of George Turner and that Joseph had married her sometime prior to March 1696.}
  2. ) Turner Essay; page 130: On the back of this unrecorded estate settlement is an inventory that states that George Turner died 7 Dec 1695.
  3. ) Turner Essay; page 132: Children of George Turner and Mary (Robbins):
    1. ) Hannah Turner; b. ca. 1660; m. before 25 May 1679 Elihu Brett. On 25 May 1679 Elihu Brett was called a son-in-law in a gift deed by George Turner.
    2. ) John Turner; b. ca. 1655-1665; m. Hannah Brett.
    3. ) Mary Turner; b. ca. 1660; m. 2 Nov 1686 Joseph Edson. (Bridgewater MA VR 2:124--provides no maiden surname ID in the marriage record.)
  1. ) Edson Genealogy; page 47-48: Joseph Edson, second son of Samuel Edson and Susannah Orcutt, was born about 1649 at Salem, Mass. He was married in 1678 to Elizabeth Holbrook, daughter of John Holbrook and Elizabeth Stream; Elizabeth died 2 Nov 1685 at Bridgewater, Mass.
