Biography

Susanna Turner was born 28 Sep 1648, [1] [2] daughter of Michael Turner (abt 1622-1675), and (Unknown) Turner (d. aft 1652)

Susanna (unmarried) with John Williams of Barnstable, the mother of John Williams ("Jr."), born 13 Nov 1671 at Sandwich, Massachusetts, in New Plymouth Colony. A clerical error in the Sandwich, Massachusetts Vital Records incorrectly lists the birth of John Williams as "Ann, dafter of Susana Tourner," but with an explanatory note in the records state that this is likely a clerical error, and that the entry should be for John Williams, son of Susana Tourner. [3]

On June 5 1672 Susanna Turner and John Williams appeared before the Plymouth court and the father was ordered to pay 2 shillings per week towards his son's keeping. On 4 March 1672/3 the Plymouth court recorded that John ("Jr.")'s uncle Isaac Turner, on behalf of his sister Susannah, had on 28 Oct 1672, by a letter with his seal, formally relieved John Williams "Sr." of further payments towards his sister's son. The infant John Williams was apparently been adopted by October, 1672 by James Percival, of Sandwich, Massachusetts. His step-daughter Mary Bassett was eighteen at the time, was the caregiver for the infant John Williams and apparently adopted him before her marriage to John Redding four years later. [4]

In this 1987 NEHGR article, Caroline Kardell concluded that their son was named John Williams and that Anne was a typo in the Sandwich records: https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/new-england-historical-and-genealogical-register/image?pageName=254&volumeId=11613&filterQuery=databasename:register
