Obituary

MR. JOSEPH TURNER[4]

Mr. Joseph Turner, a pioneer resident of the district, died in Berry Hospital on Wednesday morning. He had not been in good health for some time, and it had been arranged that an operation should be performed, but he died previous to its taking place. The deceased gentleman was aged 73 years. He had resided in Shoalhaven all his life. Some years ago he was an alderman of the Berry Council, serving the ratepayers well and faithfully for several terms. At that time he resided at Far Meadow, where he carried on dairy farming in a big way. In his heyday on the farm he bred and raced trotters, his pony, Berry's Maid, making a name for him by competing at all the coastal shows and winning many prizes. Of late years he resided in Nowra, at the corner of Kinghorn and Plunkett-streets.

He was a man held in high esteem, as was shown by the large and representative attendance at the funeral on Thursday. Speaking at the grave side in the Methodist portion of the Nowra general cemetery, Rev. A. T. Newton paid a tribute to the deceased for his activities in public life and for his sterling personal qualities. On behalf of the Methodist Church people, the general public of Shoalhaven, and on his own behalf, he expressed deepest sympathy with the bereaved widow and family, and prayed that God would be near them in this time of sorrow, and comfort them.
