Biography

MESHACK TURNER[1], son of John Turner and unknown wife, was born circa 1725 probably in Caroline County, Virginia.

His siblings were: Shadrack, Abednego,[2] Sarah, Elizabeth and Ann.[3]

His father died about 1742. Meshack and his brother, Abednego Turner, and sisters were to choose guardians according to Caroline County, Virginia Records.

"Meshack Turner being admitted to choose a guardian made choice of James Turner, who with Samuel Norment acknowledged their bond.
Abednego Turner being admitted to choose a guardian made choice of Wm. Pemberton, who with Robt. Powell acknowledged their bond.
Elizabeth Turner (granddaughter of Richard, and daughter of John) being admitted to choose a guardian made choice of Jason Meadows, who with Lewis Turner (son of Richard) acknowledged their bond.
Sarah Turner (daughter of John, granddaughter of Richard Turner) being admitted to choose a guardian made choice of Jonas Meadows (aka Meadors, Meador*) who with Lewis Turner acknowledged their bond. (This same Jonas Meador/Meadows had business dealings with Meshack in 1785 in Wilkes Co., GA.)

The three sons migrated to southwestern Virginia, settling in Halifax County, Virginia along the North Carolina border. (Halifax County, Virginia was created in 1752 from Lunenburg County.)[4] [5]

Meshack was likely married to his unknown first wife by this time. It is not known if she was the mother of any children with Meshack.

He married his 2nd wife, Rebecca Robertson (aka) Roberson.

1748 Meshack was living in the Halifax County, Virginia area in 1748. (Halifax County, Virginia was created in 1752 from Lunenburg County.[6]

Later their residence became Pittsylvania County, when Pittsylvania County was carved from Halifax in 1766. [7] In 1767, Pittsylvania County had a population of 938 whites, 316 slaves. He is said to have resided In Pittsylvania County, Virginia in 1784.

Meshack Turner is given as a Revolutionary Patriot. His 2nd wife is listed as Rebecca Robertson. He is given as a resident of Pittsylvania County, Virginia who furnished supplies per Abercrombie & Slatten, Virginia, Revolutionary Public Claims, Vol. 3, p. 761.[8]

He and his family moved to Wilkes County, Georgia about 1785.

Baptist Church records list Meshack Turner and first wife, Rebekah, as founding members of Phillips Mill Church according to The Georgia Baptist Association 1784 - 1984. Church minutes list "Meshack Turner" as being both a Ruling Elder and Deacon of the church.

Meshack Turner is given as dying before 28 January 1794 in Wilkes County, Georgia, USA, when on that date administrators were appointed to settle his estate and probate was recorded in Wilkes County, Georgia. He apparently left no will and thus died intestate. His estate was settled in probate. [9]

Following Meshack's death, his widow, Rebecca (Robertson) Turner, wrote her will date 14 October 1796. It was probated 4 January 1797 in Wilkes County, Georgia. She left a slave to her daughter, Polly and she willed that all the land should be sold and its revenue divided divided among her children. Executors were sons: James Turner and John Turner.[12]
