Marcena Greenwood Turner was born October 31, 1827, in Maine, the daughter of Alvin and Hepzibah (Wood) Turner.
She married Samuel Roland Bridgham on November 28, 1851. He was born in Hebron, Maine on May 12, 1825.
In 1860, he lived in Hebron where he was a farmer with real estate worth $2,500, and a personal estate of $955. His household included his wife Marseny [sic], their son Samuel, and their daughters Harriet, and Lydia. The two older children attended school. Also included in this household was 34-year-old farm laborer, Samuel Smith. He ran a farm of 100 improved acres and 20 unimproved acres.
In 1870, he lived in Hebron and was a farmer with real estate worth $1,400 and a personal estate worth $500. Included in his household were his wife Marcena G., and all nine of their surviving children: Crosby (farm worker), Hattie, Lydia, Mary, Oaks, Annie, Stafford, Alice and a 2-month-old infant born in March. All but the two youngest children attended school. He ran a farm of 90 improved acres, 12 wood-land acres, and 2 unimproved acres.
In July, 1872, “A daughter of Samuel Bridgham has been an invalid for many months with a disease that has baffled the skill of many physicians. She has been fourteen days without taking anything but water.” It is not known which of his five daughters was ill; possibly his daughter Harriet who died in November, 1872.
Samuel was a farmer in Hebron in 1850, 1860 and 1870. However, Samuel does not appear in the Maine 1880 census. In fact, his wife, Marsena [sic], is listed as the head of household, and she is listed as the farmer in the 1880 non-population census. Instead, we find a 55-year-old miner named Samuel Bridgham, born in Maine about 1925, in Denver, Colorado in 1880. So it appears that Samuel took a shot at finding some gold out west.
In 1880, Marsena [sic] Bridgham of Hebron was head of the household while her husband, Samuel, was mining in Colorado. Included in her household were her daughter, Mary who was “making pants,” son Ambrose, a farm worker, daughter Annie, son Stafford, daughter Alice, son Ezra; and her 12-year-old nephew, John E. All the children had attended school. I cannot place the nephew, John E. Bridgham. It is possible that this was an enumerator error, and that “Bridgham” is not his last name. Marsena rented a farm of 5 tilled acres.
In 1900, Samuel owned with a mortgage his home and farm in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, where he appeared to be retired (no occupation was listed). Living with him was his wife of 49-years, Marsena. Only eight of her ten children were living in 1900; Derrick and Harriet had died. Also living with them was their youngest son, Ezra, no occupation listed.
Samuel R. Bridgham died of “disease of the brain” in Mattapoisett on December 18, 1902, at the age of 77.
Marcena died of “senile decay” in Mattapoisett on April 16, 1909 at the age of 81. Samuel and Marcena are both buried at the Bog Brook Cemetery in Hebron, Maine.
