Born into Slavery
James Milton Turner was born into slavery on November 1, 1840 in Saint Louis, Missouri, United States. As a child, he was sold on the steps of the St. Louis US Courthouse for $50.[1]
A Reconstruction era activist, Milton Turner was one of the first African Americans in the United States Diplomatic Corps. He was a prominent politician, educator, and adventurer. He was Counsel General to Liberia from 1871 until 1878 under President Grant.
Turner, with Hannibal Carter, organized and promoted black homesteading in Oklahoma in 1881.
J, Milton Turner passed away November 1, 1915 in Ardmore, Oklahoma, at the age of 76 years. A small obituary was published in The Morning News, Wilmington, Delaware on November 2, on page one.
