Archibald Woods Turner was born Sept. 18, 1801 in Richmond, Madison Kentucky, the son of Thomas Turner (1764-1847) and Catherine Patterson (1764-1813). He obtained a liberal English education, and studied law with his brother, Major Squire Turner (1793-1871) one of the most successful and distinguished lawyers of the State.
Turner married Matilda R Stone in Madison, Kentucky, on November 29, 1827, when he was 26 years old. Their three known children were Hon. Squire Turner, Mr. William Turner, and Catherine M. Turner Garth of Columbia.
After admission to the bar, Archibald Woods practiced law in partnership with his brother for a few years, and at the age of thirty, in the fall of 1831, he emigrated to Boone County, Missouri, where he resumed his successful law practice for many years.
As a commercial and probate lawyer, Archibald Turner never had a superior at the Columbia bar. For quite a long term he acted as Public Administrator of the county, setting up during the time very large and complicated estates.
In 1838-39 he was Chair of the committee on the State University in Missouri's lower house and was instrumental in getting legislation passed to approve Boone County as the site of the new "University of Missouri", aka MIZZOU). He along with other influential men donated $1,500 to raise money for the school.
His son, Squire Turner (1836-1906), University of Missouri Class of 1855, held the position in 1872. In 1874 Squire Turner was nominated by the governor as Curator of the State University: he sought compensation for damage done to the campus during the Civil War ... when he may have been held by Confederate Militia in Academic Hall.
After retiring from the bar, Archibald Turner devoted much of his time and means to agriculture, and to the improvement of the breeds of cattle, hogs and sheep. Few if any farmers of the county have done more to improve the character of our stock and to make agriculture successful, than Mr. Turner.
Turner caught cold in attending to some outdoor business on his farm, and experienced a severe attack of pinra pneumonia, of which he died a few days later on 4 MAR 1874 in Columbia, Boone Co., Missouri at the age of 72.
